Basel is the capital of the half canton of
Basel Stadt, in northern Switzerland. It is a major industrial center and commercial
port on the Rhine River, as well as a center for banking and finance.
Known as Basilia to the Romans, it joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501, and
quickly became an intellectual center of the Swiss Reformation. Basel University,
founded in 1460, is the oldest in Switzerland. Oher landmarks include the cathedral
(containing the tomb of Erasmus), the early 16th century town hall, and several
museums, including a gallery exhibiting the works of Hans Holbein.
The website features information (in German and partly in English) about culture,
geography, transportation, gastronomy, and entertainment, as well as a virtual
city tour.
