From the 15th century onwards we can find various illustrations of the countryside just outside the city; it was open, well cultivated and inhabited all the year round, while almost all the rest of the people in Europe were still living inside the protective walls of cities and castles. This was also the situation in the Vale of Ripoli, fully confirmed by statistical data on the number of inhabitants; in fact, in 1427, when the Florentine Republic's first land register was drawn up, there were 3432 inhabitants, divided into 655 families, living in the parishes of Ripoli, Antella, Remoluzzo and Villamagna; in spite of the fact that there were still no large towns in the district, the population was also fairly evenly distributed throughout the more distant areas. This was partly due to the fact that, in the 14th-15th centuries, when their business interests were really thriving, the upper and middleclass Florentine merchants had invested some of their profits in land; this was not only to make a different kind of investment (and reduce their risks) but also to be able to supply Florence with plentiful and regular food supplies. With the gradual decline of manufacturing, many merchants began to buy up more and more land in order to transfer their investments from commerce to agriculture. At the beginning of this century, there were 15.936 residents (census of 1901) living in the borough of Bagno a Ripoli, 68% of whom lived in the country; the population in the villages was composed of 5.O57 residents, including 2.O56 working at small craft occupations connected with the world of agriculture or providing various services for the city of Florence, like the launderers; others were directly employed in the city and commuted there every day (85O).
