The fame of the Villa of Lappeggi makes it stand out against all the other great mansions in the area. After becoming one of the residences of the Medici family in 1569 and being restructured by Bernardo Buontalenti in the 16th century, it reached its greatest splendour under Cardinal Francesco Maria de' Medici, who had it remodernized by architect Antonio Ferri between 1698 and 1708. Little remains today of its former splendour; only the flight of steps in front of the villa and the shell-shaped grotto below still bring to mind its late Baroque decorations. It is situated near Antella but is not open to the public.

The Villa of Mondeggi
The Villa of Lillianoalso once belonged to the Medici family; purchased in 1646 by Ferdinando II, it was used as a guesthouse after being added to the Lappeggi estates. The Giannellini family owned it in the 15th century and it was also the ancient residence of the Capponi family; however the villa, surrounded by a large and beautiful garden, owes its present dignified and elegant aspect to the alterations carried out by Antonio Ferri, in the early 18th century. Villa Il Riposo, former home of the Vecchietti family is situated just above Grassina, and, apart from containing frescoes by Santi di Tito, is also well known for having hosted Raffaele Borghini, an illustrious man of letters of the 16th century, who composed his masterpiece here which he also called "Il Riposo" (Repose). It was partly restructured in the late 16th century by Giambologna though little remains today of these alterations commissioned by Bernardo Vecchietti, only a nymphaeum, just past the villa, known as the Little house of the Fairies or the Grotto of the Mirage; formed of a grotto and pool that was originally decorated with statues and reliefs, it is preceded by an imposing entrance distinguished by blocks of limestone, while it is still possible to see the small fountains outside, originally plastered and painted brick-red, with the name of the purchaser and the date, 1571, written above.
Villa La Tana, near Candeli
The imposing Villa of Mondeggi, near Capannuccia, is also worthy of note, the prestigious home of the Pisan Della Gherardesca family since 1538; the villa is surrounded by extensive grounds and run today as a farm.
Villa la Tana lies instead in the direction of Via di Villamagna and, in the 16th century, belonged to Venetian Bianca Cappello, mistress and later wife of the Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici. Just outside Antella we can still find two large family mansions, Villa Peruzzi and Villa Monna Giovannella. The former, also called La Torre, was the property of the Peruzzi family from the 13th to the 19th century and here Donna Emilia, the wife of Ubaldino Peruzzi, held her literary receptions. The second villa is now the seat of the "Experimental Centre of the Faculty of Agriculture of Florence" and often hosts the cultural events organized by the Town Council of Bagno a Ripoli.
