The Council district covers an area of 7409 hectares, with about a third lying on level ground and the remaining two-thirds formed of hill country; it occupies a position of notable geographic importance because it is situated right on the vital "link" between the Vale of Florence and the south-eastern end of the Arno valley, formed by the two sub-regions of the Upper Valdarno on one side and the Chianti on the other. Its borders do not necessarily follow obvious physical objects, like rivers or roads, apart from in the north and east, where they coincide respectively with the route of the Arno. The last changes made to the borough of Bagno a Ripoli date back to 1928 and favoured the Florence City Council.
