Church of San Lorenzo a Montisoni,
with Florence in the distanceThe city of Florence sprawls nearly as far as Bagno a Ripoli. Gradually more and more greenery can be seen growing among the houses until the countryside countryside takes over and is dominated by green fields, olive groves and woodland. The pale shapes of the villas and old farmhouses, the churches and the ancient parish churches appear to be scattered haphazardly over the landscape. The city is thus transformed into an "urban countryside", though it is impossible to define where the city ends and the countryside begins; it eventually gives shape to an extraordinarily unusual landscape, making the outskirts of Florence quite different from any other city in Europe.
The many works of art to be found in the parish churches, as well as the smaller churches churches and oratories in the district, testify to the deep religious beliefs of the community and the rich commissions offered by wealthy Florentine families.
