An account by Elena Zazzeri (I)
To Mario Primicerio, Mayor of Florence
Dear Mr: Mayor, I have heard through various channels that a celebrations are being organized in Florence for the thirtieth anniversary of the flood of 1966. Like many other people in a similar emergency, I also did all I could to help by working as a volonteer: I helped to collect and select clothing and other basic necessities and organize temporary sleeping quarters in the De Amicis school at Sesto for people flooded out of their homes, while a craftsman and his family stayed at my father's house for several days.
Wearing identity arm bands (I still have mine), various friends and I travelled backwards and forwards between Florence, Campi and Brozzi, either in our own cars or those of the Town Council of Sesto, to deliver supplies, documents and medicines.
I don't really think of myself as a "mud angel", like the people who came from all over the world to try and save our priceless heritage, but I just felt like telling you my story, humble as it is, as a reminder of all the thousands of people who worked so hard at the time to try and relieve the suffering of the people. All I wanted to say was: I was there too!
Best wishes from:
Elena Zazzeri Ceccherini Via Tommaseo 12, 50019 Sesto Fiorentino
