BARCELONA

It was founded by the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, the father of Hannibal. The Romans later rebuilt the city along the lines of a Roman military camp, placing it on the hill where today we can find the City Hall on one side and the headquarters of the region (Plaça de Sant Jaume) on the other. It was conquered by the Visigoths in the 5th century and by the Moors in the 8th century. It was taken by the Franks in 801 and then sacked by Al-Mansur in 985. Barcelona became a very prosperous city in the 10th century and this prosperity continued through to 1137, when it was united to the Kingdom of Aragon and became its most important city. It later became one of the greatest ports in the Mediterranean and was enrich with many fine Gothic buildings. Two new rings of city walls were built to fortify the medieval heart of the city between the 13th and 14th centuries.
